                                                                 Water Quality Research at STS

On March 1, 2018, the International Science and Technology Center Project “Research of Chemical Toxicants Influence on General Ecological Situation Formation at the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site” was launched. The efforts and operations to implement this project are the responsibility of the National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

This project is a pioneering one which is underway in Kazakhstan from the opening of ISTC head office in Astana city.

The goal of the project is water quality research at the water consumption objects within the Semipalatinsk Test Site and assessment of chemical toxicants contribution to the total chemical-radiation dose for residents living in close vicinity to the test site.

Within the framework of project, the operations on defining the chemical water quality parameters and concentration of chemical toxicants’ heavy metals and radionuclides at the water consumption objects; analysis of toxic metals, heavy elements and radionuclides concentration in bottom sediments, shallow soil and plants will be carried out. Moreover, the radiation-geochemical zoning of STS water objects upon the level and type of contamination as well as assessment of STS water consumption objects are scheduled to be conducted.
