Technical Meeting of EAGLE-4 Program Participants Held in Kurchatov

Specialists from the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), Marubeni Utility Services Ltd. (MUS) and National Nuclear Center met in Kurchatov from September 7 to 9. 2026, to discuss the implementation of the EAGLE-4 experimental program, plans for in-pile and out-of pile reactor experiments, and a preparation of an interim report.

A technical meeting on the EAGLE-4 experimental program was held at NNC RK with a delegation from Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). Mr. Kanzaki Yurugi, Deputy Director General of the JAEA, led delegation. Experts from Marubeni Utility Services (MUS), which coordinates communication between the customer and the contractor, also took part in the meeting.   

This meeting was the first since the two sides signed a new contract for work on the EAGLE-4 experimental program. Project builds on years of research supporting the design of the JSFR, 4th Gen. sodium-cooled fast reactor that under development in Japan. Under the program, in-reactor and out-of-reactor experiments will be carried out at the NNC research facilities.  

Participants used the meeting to discuss the planning for upcoming work and adherence to the schedule, current status of preparations for the experimental studies, technical requirements for experimental devices and their testing conditions and the results of calculations carried out to date.

One of the key issues was agreement on the content of the interim report on the progress of project. Participants outlined the main areas for further work and confirmed the need to adhere to the agreed timelines and schedule for conducting the experiments.
