Engagement in Annual IAEA Coordination Group Meeting  on Uranium Legacy Sites

The National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan took part in the annual technical meeting of the IAEA Coordination Group for Uranium Legacy Sites (CGULS), held in Aktau from July 13 to 17, 2026. 

Event brought together leading experts and representatives of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the European Commission and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (ERBD), along with specialists from Central Asian countries, to discuss the safe remediation and long-term monitoring of uranium legacy sites.  

Program of the meeting included plenary sessions and technical visits to sites in the region. Participants toured the Koshkar-Ata tailings storage facility, one of the largest uranium legacy sites undergoing remediation, the Chemical-Hydrometallurgical Plant (CHP), and the BN-350 reactor, the world’s first industrial fast neutron reactor, which is currently being decommissioned.  

This meeting underscored the importance of cooperation and experience-sharing between Central Asian countries and international partners. Participants identified further areas for collaboration, including the development of environmental monitoring technologies and the mobilization of resources to ensure radiation safety in the region.  

Next annual technical meeting of the IAEA Coordination Group for Uranium Legacy Sites (CGULS) will be held in the Kyrgyz Republic in July 2027.
