The National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan is developing its scientific and technical competencies in the fields of radiation safety, biological dosimetry, and emergency preparedness for nuclear and radiological situations.
Biodosimetry makes it possible to assess individual radiation doses, determine the scale of radiation exposure, and set priorities for the medical examination of affected persons. The application of such methods is of particular importance in organizing a prompt and effective response to radiation accidents.
As part of the development of this area, the NNC RK took part in the IAEA Regional Meeting on “Medical Preparedness and Response in case of a Nuclear or Radiological Emergency”, which was held from October 12 to 16, 2026, in France.
This activity was organized under the Technical Cooperation Project RER9161 with the participation of the French Authority for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection (ASNR). The meeting brought together specialists from countries of the European Region representing organizations in the fields of radiation protection, healthcare, scientific research, and emergency response.
Participants reviewed international approaches to radiation monitoring, protection of the population, medical support for affected persons, and inter-agency coordination. Special attention was paid to the integration of biodosimetry into national emergency preparedness systems.
Participation in the meeting enabled the National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan to study current international practices, exchange professional experience, and become acquainted with modern methods of radiation dose assessment. Gained knowledge will be used for the further development of the Center competencies and the improvement of the radiation safety and emergency preparedness system of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
