National Nuclear Center of RK and Japanese TOSHIBA Corporation discussed joint projects

 In May 2022, the online meeting was attended by specialists of the National Nuclear Center of RK and TOSHIBA Corporation (Japan) to discuss joint projects such as “Fukushima Debris” and “CORMIT-2”. Erlan Batyrbekov, Director General of NNC RK and Hidekazu Usui, Director of TOSHIBA Corporation opened the meeting with welcoming speech.

Several reports were presented at the meeting. In particular, specialists of RSE NNC RK outlined the main results of “Fukushima Debris” and “CORMIT-2” projects, covered the potential of the enterprise in studying the processes of natural corium aging, changing its structural and physical-mechanical characteristics that should be taken in account when extracting solidified core melt from emergency reactor “Fukushima-1”, as well as experimental modelling of various scenarios of corium interaction with structural, heatproof and sacrificial materials.

Japanese colleagues in their reports demonstrated the progress in operations on removal of solidified “Fukushima-1” core melting fragments. A report was presented on the application of results obtained in RSE NNC RK under the projects CORMIT and CORMIT-PhII that formed the basis of draft for passive safety system in ABWR reactor.

Another topic for discussion was the achievements of Toshiba specialists in development of muon tomography for nuclear material identification consisting in the implementation of this method, the development of effective trackers and data processing software that allow to determine the type of material and its mass with a sufficiently high accuracy.

Summarizing the meeting, all participants unanimously looked forward to the renewed fruitful cooperation between two organizations in "Face to Face" mode. Specific purposes for cooperation will be further discussed.
