26 May 2026

On May 26, 2026, a French delegation led by Mr. Sylvain Guio, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of France, arrived at the National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan on a working visit.
The delegation also included Mr. Philippe Storr, Director of Energy Affairs at the French Atomic Energy and Alternative Energies Commission (CEA), and representatives of the CEA.

During the meeting, the parties noted the high level of cooperation that had been established between the National Nuclear Centre of the Republic of Kazakhstan and French organizations in the field of the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Particular attention was paid to the implementation of the joint SAIGA project, which is aimed at researching safety issues related to fourth-generation reactors.

The importance of international scientific cooperation, the level of development of Kazakhstan’s research infrastructure and the potential for expanding bilateral cooperation into new areas were also emphasized. The importance of exchanging experience in developing science and high technologies, and in establishing modern science and technology centers, was highlighted separately.

For reference: The SAIGA project, which is being implemented under a 2019 contract, involves conducting experimental research using the IGR research reactor. The program focuses on studying how the fuel assembly of a promising French reactor would behave in the event of a coolant loss accident.
