IAEA Consultative Meeting

A consultative meeting was held in Vienna from March 30 to April 1, 2026, with the participation of representatives from the National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the U.S Department of Energy and the IAEA. 

Within the framework of the meeting, participants examined issues concerning the reprocessing of graphite fuel from the IGR research reactor. Also discussed ongoing research and development activities related to the utilization of fuel from the IVG 1M. 

Particular attention was paid to the progress of ongoing projects, including the development of equipment for the safe repackaging of highly enriched uranium (HEU) fuel from the IGR research reactor.  

Also reviewed progress on construction and installation works at the site for the dilution and immobilization of highly enriched uranium (HEU) fuel, as well as aspects of safeguards, non-proliferation, and nuclear material accounting systems in the fuel processing progress. 

This meeting represented a vital step toward strengthening international cooperation and enhancing safety standards in projects involving the management of nuclear materials.
