Memorandum of Understanding is Signed

On April 22, 2019 in Nur-Sultan the Memorandum of Understanding in area of nuclear nonproliferation and security is signed between the National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan (NNC RK) and Korea Institute of Nuclear Nonproliferation and Control (“KINAC”).

The memorandum was signed by Professor Erlan Batyrbekov, Director General of NNC RK, and Doctor Sok Chul Kim, President of KINAC.

The Parties believe that the current memorandum will become a vital mechanism of cooperation development between organizations in area of nuclear nonproliferation and security, and will contribute considerably to technology enhancement and capacity building for nuclear nonproliferation and safety areas of both countries.

Under the current memorandum, the parties agreed to conduct cooperation through informational exchange upon the following directions:

  • technology in area of nuclear nonproliferation and security;
  • research and studies in area of nonproliferation and security;
  • education and training in area of nuclear nonproliferation and security.

Let us recall that the first visit of the Korean specialists from KINAC Organization and Nuclear Safety and Security Commission of the Republic of Korea to the National Nuclear Center of RK was made in June 2018. Upon visit results, the Korean side highly appreciated the works performed on liquidation of nuclear infrastructure and nuclear weapon testing consequences at the territory of the former Semipalatinsk Test Site and expressed their interest in learning from Kazakhstani experience in denuclearization issues dealing at the former STS.
