In the first 10 day of September the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) experts conducted National training course “Rules and Standards for Radioactive Wastes Safety” in Kurchatov town.
The experts from IAEA were: DR ORMAI PETER – IAEA (Hungary), DEGNAN PAUL JOSEPH – IAEA (United Kingdom), CATALYSTRA independent expert (Australia) and ANDREY GUSKOV – IAEA (Russia).
Training course was organized by the Institute of Geophysical Researches under international contract. Members from the National Nuclear Center of RK also passed training.
Basic orientations of the national geological disposal program implementation in Kazakhstan were reviewed during the five-day course, namely: IAEA safety standards, the principles, requirements and guide on radioactive waste management, national policy and strategy for radioactive wastes disposal, national inventory development on radioactive waste management requirements determination; components and structure of report on comprehensive security assessment, process of geological repository site selection, key technical aspects of radioactive waste disposal objects and so on. Educational program is developed on the basis of the recent IAEA recommendations and considering specific needs of Kazakhstan.
The course participants together with experts reviewed and studied practical tasks on radioactive wastes management following examples of such countries as the United Kingdom, Hungary, Japan, Sweden, USA, Canada, Finland, Belgium and others, that actively participate in the process of negative consequences reduction through geological disposal program implementation.
