NNC RK Deepens International Cooperation in RW Management

09 July 2026

A delegation from the National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan held a series  of working meetings in Germany with leading organizations specializing in radioactive waste management.

The key event of the working visit was talks with NUKEM Technologies Engineering Services GmbH on the implementation of joint initiatives under the Memorandum of Cooperation signed in 2015. Parties discussed current approaches to the deployment of radioactive waste management technologies, including their collection, sorting, treatment and conditioning and held a detailed review of the roadmap items for developing cooperation in this field.

As part of the visit, a working meeting was held with BGE representatives – the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal Company, the organization responsible for the construction and operation of radioactive waste disposal facilities. Followed discussion focused on approaches to the design of RW disposal facilities, modern engineering solutions, and opportunities for applying German experience in establishing a system for the final disposal of radioactive waste in Kazakhstan.

These meetings carry particular significance amid efforts to improve national radioactive waste management system of Kazakhstan. Recently adopted Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan “On the Management of Radioactive Waste” provides a legal framework for developing modern infrastructure for the safe storage and disposal of such waste. Against this backdrop, international cooperation, experience-sharing, and the study of global practices are becoming key to building an effective and safe radioactive waste management system in the country.
