On July 3, 2026, the Republic of Kazakhstan officially joined the International Energy Agency’s Tokamak Program (IEA-TCP), which is part of the Technology Collaboration Program (TCP).
This marked an important step in integrating Kazakhstan’s domestic fusion science into the global scientific community. Kazakhstan joined the ranks of countries participating in the international program on controlled nuclear fusion, uniting the ITER program and national programs from the European Union (EUROfusion), the United States, China, Japan, India, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Switzerland.
The Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan for Atomic Energy has designated the National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan as the organization representing the country in the program. The National Nuclear Center will participate in the CTP TCP’s governing and scientific-technical bodies, coordinate international research, exchange scientific and technical information, and develop cooperation in the field of tokamak physics and technology.
Kazakhstan’s accession to the CTP TCP was a natural outcome of the long-term development of the scientific infrastructure at the National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the successful operation of the Kazakhstani Materials Science Tokamak (KTM), and the active participation of Kazakhstani specialists in international research.
Participation in the program will provide Kazakhstani scientists with more opportunities to conduct joint research with leading global scientific centers, enable the KTM tokamak to be used more effectively, and strengthen international cooperation and Kazakhstan’s position in the global fusion community.
