Regular Technical Meeting on the EAGLE Experimental Programme Convened

From April 13 to 15, 2026, the 7th technical meeting of specialists from the National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), and Marubeni Utility Services, Ltd. (MUS) was held in Kurchatov as a part of the implementation of the EAGLE experimental programme.  

The meeting was dedicated to the preparation of contractual documentation for the new phase of the programme – EAGLE-4, which continues long-term research aimed at substantiating the design of the fourth-generation sodium-cooled fast reactor JSFR and includes both in-pile and out-of-pile experiments to be conducted at the facilities of the NNC RK. 

During the meeting, the participants focused on coordinating the final wording of the draft Contract, the Memorandum of Cooperation, and the Agreement, including legal, financial and economic aspects. The requirements of the Technical Specification were also confirmed, the results of calculations were presented, and potential risks associated with the implementation of the programme were reviewed, including the procurement of necessary materials and equipment. 

Following the meeting, the parties noted the constructive nature of the discussions and confirmed their shared understanding of the key tasks, including adherence to timelines and requirements for the implementation of the experimental programme. 

In the near future, the joint team of the National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) will focus on preparing the package of documents for signature by the heads of organizations, which is scheduled for June-July 2026.
