The latest meeting of the working group on the application of IAEA safeguards

From 13 to 14 April, Astana hosted the latest meeting of the Working Group on the Application of IAEA Safeguards in the Republic of Kazakhstan (SIRG 2026). During the meeting, the Committee for Nuclear Supervision and Control of the Kazakhstan Atomic Energy Agency presented updated information on Kazakhstan’s nuclear fuel cycle activities, as well as on measures and plans regarding former nuclear test sites. 

The discussion focused on issues related to the accounting for and control of nuclear materials, including aspects relating to the dilution and immobilisation of highly enriched uranium (HEU) in the fuel of the IGR and IVG.1M research reactors.

Following the meeting, key actions for 2026 were formulated, and the next meeting was scheduled for October 2026.
