Technical Coordination Meeting Conducted as Part of the EAGLE Experimental Program

From 26 to 28 January 2026, the 6th technical meeting of specialists from the National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), and Marubeni Utility Service, Ltd. (MUS) was held in Kurchatov, concerning the next stage of long-term EAGLE program (post-EAGLE-3 project). Under the contract, work is being carried out on a feasibility study for conducting in-reactor and out-of-reactor experiments to support the design justification of the 4th Gen. sodium-cooled JSFR fast reactor.    

Over the course of the meeting, the participants reviewed the current status of work progress in accordance with the schedule, as well as, design outcomes of in-reactor and out-of-reactor experimental devices and the computational justifications for their test conditions on the IGR research reactor. 

A separate discussion block was dedicated to matters concerning the preparation and approval of a new contract for the EAGLE-4 experimental program. The conditions for executing the future experimental work were reviewed, along with potential risks and factors that could affect their implementation timeline.  

From the JAEA side, the meeting was attended by specialists who are the project customers and research supervisors. Representatives from the planning, economic, and financial departments of the National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan and JAEA also joined the discussions via video conference format. 

Following the meeting, the parties outlined the subsequent steps and agreed on key actions for the upcoming period. Work on the next phase of the EAGLE program (post-EAGLE-3 project) continues according to schedule, with the next technical meeting planned for June 2026.
