Between November 10 and 20, 2025, the National Nuclear Center of RK jointly held an international scientific and practical workshop with the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Oxford, that focused on seismogeology and the risks posed by active geological faults.
The event facilitated a crucial discussion on the seismology and active fault structures of the epicentral zone of the 1889 Chilik earthquake (M8.3) in the Almaty region.
Held as part of the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (UK FDCO) Program on seismic hazard assessment in Central Asia, the workshop received additional support from the UK COMET science initiative.
This gathering united leading specialists and international experts in seismology from across the world, including Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Georgia, Armenia, Italy, the United States, Chile, and the UK, all of whom conduct fundamental and applied research in the field.
The seminar program combined theoretical lectures with practical sessions. Participants received training in operating unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for aerial photography, constructing Digital Elevation Models using GNSS (DGPS) technologies, and mastering methods of paleoseismic trenching and dating. The program also included field sessions at the Saty Fault, as well as in areas of historical and more recent landslides triggered by earthquakes.
The newly acquired knowledge will allow specialists to study active faults more efficiently, thereby directly improving the accuracy of seismic hazard evaluation for various regions.
