Radiation survey of the former Semipalatinsk test site is one of the activity areas of the Institute of Radiation Safety and Ecology. To assure implementation of all scheduled operations, preparations are made every year prior to field season, which consist in determination of sampling volume, visits scheduling, equipment and instruments preparation.
It should be mentioned that though the preparation seems to be insignificant, however even correct setting of sampling instrument may affect quality and speed of operations, not to mention adjustment and preparation of complicated geodetic-topographic and gamma-spectrometric equipment. Moreover, all equipment in service is obligatorily and regularly calibrated that is confirmed by certificates.
Another important point is preparation of infrastructure, from mobile portacabins, which proved to be good in field conditions, to storage rooms. Thus, at the present day, preparation of the mobile portacabins is completed, to include regular repair inside them, and all systems necessary for comfortable living are checked.
Pre-field preparation covered vehicle park. Though regular maintenance is provided for each vehicle, prior to start field season, scheduled preventive repair should be made. Separate attention should be paid to drilling facilities, to meet specified strict requirements.
In general, we can state that preparation to the field season is a kind of clean-up day in fair April day, allowing to arrange everything, and today Institute of Radiation Safety and Ecology has for 100% completed the preparation for the field season 2020.
