Joint Statement of the US DoE National Nuclear Safety Administration and Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan for Atomic Energy

On September 16, 2025 on the sidelines of the 69th IAEA General Conference, Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan for Atomic Energy and National Nuclear Safety Administration of the US Department of Energy signed a Joint Statement.  

The Joint Statement says:

• on the successful storage of high enriched spent nuclear fuel of the IVG.1M research reactor into a silo type storage designed and built for safe SNF storage. Spent nuclear fuel will be stored in Silo, until the NNC RK and NNSA teams are currently developing a solution for its final utilization; 
• on the intention of the parties to continue joint efforts in support of the common objectives on minimization of the use of high enriched uranium (HEU) and strengthening of non-proliferation regime.  

The signing of such Joint Statements on the sidelines of the IAEA General Conference has taken place before, specifically in 2016, 2019, 2020, and 2023, and has become a well-established tradition during bilateral meetings between the delegations of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the United States.
