In the framework of “Cormit-II” international project that have been implementing in cooperation with Japanese Corporation Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation through intermediary of Marubeni Utility Services, Ltd., on January 27-29, 2020, a regular meeting between technical specialists of Japan and Kazakhstan was held. According to the agreement for 2019-2020, on December 24, 2019 RT-9 test was successfully realized at “Lava-B” experimental facility, as a result of which data were obtained on corium melt interaction with refractory materials of two types – aluminum oxide and zirconium dioxide. During the meeting Japanese specialists visited HFG-135 and “Lava-B” experimental facilities, as well as technological systems of “Angara” test-bench. During visit Toshiba specialists learnt about testing results and material research results of RT-8, RT-9 tests, representing series of small-scale studies, as well as degree of preparation for the future similar experiment RT-10 that is planned to be conducted in February 2020. Administrative and technical issues concerning the next agreement 2020-2021 were also reviewed at the meeting under which it is planning to conduct 2 large-scale experiments RT-11 and RT-12.

For information. “Cormit-II” project is aimed at studying the interaction between molten core (corium) materials of light-water reactor and refractory materials in case of severe accident. Cooperative work of Kazakhstani and Japanese specialists involves implementation of series of experimental and material research studies to consider the results of corium contacting with different refractory materials (such as zirconium dioxide and aluminum oxide) under conditions of residual energy release simulation in corium. The whole practical part of research is carried out at experimental base of the National Nuclear Center of RK. The large-scale experiments are carried out at “Lava-B” facility within “Angara” test-bench, the small-scale ones – at HFG-135 facility. All facilities are located at the territory of Research Reactor Complex “Baikal-1”.
