Workshop. Kazakhstan-Japanese Cooperation in the Field of Atomic Energy

Workshop was held in two cities of Kazakhstan:
Kurchatov - 24.08-26.08.2003.
Almaty - 27.08-28.08.2003.

Japanese and Kazakhstani officials and specialists in different fields: nuclear power, medicine and ecology, took part in the workshop. In total, more than 100 people have attended.

The objective of the workshop was to summarize 10-year cooperation of the Japanese and Kazakhstani specialists in the field of nuclear power safety (EAGLE, COTELS projects) and further cooperation development not only in the field of nuclear power but in ecology and medicine as well.

Progress and problems of R&D on the projects were discussed, and lines of further .development of cooperation were indicated in the speeches represented of Yu.S. Vasiljev the Kazakhstani manager and Japanese manager of the safety research group, Mr. Sato.

The presentations of Prof. Aoki, Prof. Kamijya, Dr. Kutsumi in the field of radiation medicine, radio-ecology and biology were quite interesting. Japan has a great experience in the research of radiation impact on human body. Research data can become another field for potential cooperation. The STS problems are just indicated and it is only possible to solve them with the support of International Community, and Japanese specialists are taking a leading role in this research.

The participation of Mr. Hiraoka Hiroshima city ex-mayor, honorary president of the "Hiroshima-Semipalatinsk" project, , gives a hope that cooperation will be fruitful and effective.

Japanese specialists, Mr. Hirai and Mr. Aizawa have represented summary reports on the subject of development strategy for the works on light water and fast reactor issues in Japan. Kazakhstani specialists were impressed by this information and we hope to extend the subject of cooperation in the field of peaceful use of nuclear power in the near future. The arrival of Murakami the mayor of Tokai-mura village from where like from Kurchatov the nuclear research has originated and his presentation highlight that we have many things in common both backgrounds and in future development of nuclear research. Presentations of our scientists, N.A.Kayupova, honorable director of the R&D Institute Center for Mother and Child Care and Sh.T.Tuhvatulin NNC director general, assured that our cooperation is mutually beneficial.

Kazakhstani specialists would like to thank Prof. Fujii-e for his grate contribution to successful development of Japanese-Kazakhstani cooperation.
